Pillars in Action: Gentle Presence
It’s that time of year again…..Sleigh bells, Mistletoe, Christmas trees, and lights all around, the most wonderful time of the year. While I love all of the fun of the holidays, I also love that it is a time where we can reflect on the real meaning behind it all….love!
Christmas is a time where God showed His great love for us, by sending His son into the world to be born, and in turn we show our love to others during this season. We cheer people up, get together with our families and friends, give gifts to each other, be kind to one another, and help others who need help. We spread love all around which in essence is the “Spirit of Christmas”. In thinking about this, I realized that St. Joseph Home is an extremely unique place in that you can see the “Spirit of Christmas” lived out all year long not just during the Holiday Season.
Love is lived out at St. Joseph Home through Gentle Presence which is one of our Pillars (values). Gentle Presence, taught by John McGee PhD, is where we understand that all humans are created with one desire, to love and to be loved. Love is seen in action at St. Joseph Home every hour, minute, and second of the day, whether it be a staff member reading to a resident, supporting a resident with a need, or a resident lighting up the room and expressing love just by their smile, or by them simply reminding you to put all the pressures of life aside and just be present in the moment with one another. St. Joseph Home reminds you to look to all that is truly important in life, kindness, compassion, loving unconditionally, gratitude, awareness, and celebrating each other for the unique individuals that God created us to be.
St. Joseph Home is a daily reminder that, “Love and Kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you the giver”—Barbara De Angelis.
May you experience love, joy, and peace this Holiday Season and the whole year through.
